Wuxi City, referred to as "Xi", is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province. It is a Type I large city [139] and is located in the eastern part of China and the southern part of Jiangsu Province. It is adjacent to the Yangtze River in the north, Taihu Lake in the south, Suzhou City in the east, Changzhou City in the west, Huzhou City in Zhejiang Province and Xuancheng City in Anhui Province in the south and southwest. It is a city in the central area of the Yangtze River Delta [6] and a member city of the Shanghai Metropolitan Area [140]. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal passes through the city, with a total area of 4,627.46 square kilometers [122]. The territory is mainly plains, with scattered low mountains and residual hills. It belongs to the northern subtropical humid monsoon climate zone. As of the end of 2023, the city has jurisdiction over 5 districts and administers 2 county-level cities; the city's permanent population is 7.495 million. [51] [105] Wuxi City is an important birthplace of Jiangnan civilization and Wu culture. Legend has it that it was named Wuxi because the tin mines in Xishan were exhausted. There are written records of this in the late Shang Dynasty. In the fifth year of Emperor Gaozu of the Western Han Dynasty (202 BC), Wuxi County was established and belonged to Kuaiji County. In the second year of Taikang of the Western Jin Dynasty (281 AD), it belonged to Piling County. Since the 16th year of the Republic of China (1927), it has been directly under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province. After Wuxi County was liberated on April 23, 1949, it was divided into Wuxi City and Wuxi County. In 1953, Jiangsu Province was established and Wuxi City became a provincial-level city. On March 1, 1983, the city-county system was implemented and Jiangyin, Yixing and Wuxi counties were placed under the jurisdiction of Wuxi City. [135] Wuxi City is an important central city in the Yangtze River Delta region approved by the State Council, a national historical and cultural city, a national comprehensive transportation hub city, a national advanced manufacturing base, a regional highland of scientific and technological innovation and a cultural and creative base, and a scenic tourist destination with lakeside landscape characteristics. [82] Wuxi City is the main birthplace of modern Chinese national industry and commerce, township enterprises, and the "Southern Jiangsu Model". It has landmark industries such as the Internet of Things, integrated circuits, and biomedicine. Wuxi has a strong cultural atmosphere and is the birthplace of historical celebrities such as Qian Zhongshu, Qin Bangxian, Rong Yiren, Abing, and Xu Beihong. [136] In 2024, Wuxi's GDP will reach 1,626.329 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.8% at constant prices.
Xuhui District, a district under the jurisdiction of Shanghai, is located in the southwest of Shanghai's central urban area. It borders Huangpu District to the northeast, Huangpu River to the east, Pudong New Area across the river, Minhang District to the west, and Jing'an District and Changning District to the north. The total area is 54.93 square kilometers [32]. The district has 12 sub-districts and 1 town under its jurisdiction, with a total of 306 neighborhood committees. The district people's government is located at No. 336, Caoxi North Road, Xujiahui Sub-district. [1] At the end of 2023, the total permanent population of the district was 1.1098 million, an increase of 1.0% over the previous year [51]. Xu Guangqi, a scholar of Wenyuan Pavilion in the late Ming Dynasty, established a farm near the confluence of Zhaojia River and Lijing River, engaged in agricultural experiments and wrote books, and cooperated with Italian and European missionary Matteo Ricci, creating a precedent for cultural exchanges between China and the West. Later, the Xu family settled here for generations, and the area was named Xujiahui, hence the name of the district. [48] The district has a northern subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. [52] Xuhui District is an industrial structure dominated by modern service industry, supported by industry, commerce and real estate. [54] Xujiahui in Xuhui District is the sub-center of the city in the southwest of Shanghai. Xuhui is one of the central urban areas in Shanghai that has basically completed the renovation of old districts earlier. Xuhui focuses on the development of high-tech industries such as information technology, modern biomedicine, and nano-new materials, forming an industrial scale for the development of industrial electronic information and biomedicine in the district. In 2024, the GDP of Xuhui District will be 393.12 billion yuan, and the district-level fiscal revenue will increase by 12.37% year-on-year. [90] In 2024, Xuhui District issued the "Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone Xuhui Linkage Innovation Zone Construction Plan", officially launching the construction of the "Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone Xuhui Linkage Innovation Zone"
Tsim Sha Tsui (English name: Tsim Sha Tsui, also known as Tsim Sha Tsui), formerly known as Tsim Sha Tsui, was called Tsim Sha Tsui in ancient times and Xiangbu Tau in the old days. In the past, the area around Dongguan was full of fragrant woods. The juice squeezed from the roots of fragrant woods could be used as spices, called Wanxiang. Due to the convenient water transportation in Hong Kong, spices would first be concentrated in Tsim Sha Tsui, then shipped to Shek Pai Wan in Wong Chuk Hang on Hong Kong Island by ship, and then transported to the mainland by water. It had developed into a settlement in the Ming Dynasty. Tsim Sha Tsui is part of the Yau Tsim Mong District in Kowloon. It is located at the southern end of the Kowloon Peninsula. It is bounded by Austin Road to Hong Zhuang Road in the north, and faces Central and Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island across Victoria Harbour. From a geographical point of view, Tsim Sha Tsui is a cape at the southern end of the Kowloon Peninsula, adjacent to Hung Hom Bay. Before the land reclamation, the sea water near the area was blocked by Guanyong Mountain, and a long and sharp beach was formed at its southern end, which was very prominent in terms of topography. The original coastline of Tsim Sha Tsui is around Salisbury Road and Chatham Road. There were originally two parallel capes: Kowloon Cape and Blackhead Cape. There is also a small bay between the two capes. After many reclamation projects, Tsim Sha Tsui has increased a lot of land area, but it is still a highly developed area and has always been the heart of Hong Kong.
The central urban area of Shanghai, with famous attractions such as the Bund and Nanjing Road. Huangpu District is under the jurisdiction of Shanghai and is the economic, administrative and cultural center of Shanghai. [89] It is located in the central part of Shanghai's downtown area, at the southwest end of the confluence of the Huangpu River and Suzhou River. It starts from Suzhou River in the north, borders the Huangpu River in the east and south, and extends to Chengdu North Road, Yan'an Middle Road, Shaanxi South Road, Zhaojiabang Road, and Ruijin South Road in the west. The district covers an area of 20.52 square kilometers [11], of which 18.71 square kilometers are land and 1.81 square kilometers are water. [11] As of the end of 2023, it has 10 sub-districts under its jurisdiction [67] [69] and a permanent population of 504,700 [85]. Huangpu District carries the history of Shanghai's more than 700 years of city construction and more than 180 years of port opening, and has witnessed the development and changes of Shanghai as an international metropolis. [47] From the tenth year of the Tianbao reign of the Tang Dynasty (751 AD) to the Song Dynasty, it belonged to Huating County. After the district adjustment in December 1959, it was divided into Huangpu District, Luwan District, and Nanshi District. After two “reconstruction” in 2000 and 2011, Huangpu District was established [47]. Huangpu District has four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, and a long frost-free period. It has a subtropical monsoon climate [36]. It is located in the northeast of the saucer-shaped depression of Taihu Lake and belongs to the saucer edge highland [36]. During his work in Shanghai [47], General Secretary Xi Jinping positioned Huangpu as the “heart, window, and business card” of Shanghai [47]. In June 2020, Huangpu District was selected as the first batch of national demonstration areas for the construction of a law-based government [48]. In January 2021, Huangpu District became the first batch of national cultural and tourism consumption pilot cities [49]. In 2023, Huangpu District will achieve a year-on-year growth of 5.9% in gross regional product (GDP) [85]. In 2024, Huangpu District will achieve a GDP of 334.441 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.0%.
