The central urban area of Shanghai, with famous attractions such as the Bund and Nanjing Road. Huangpu District is under the jurisdiction of Shanghai and is the economic, administrative and cultural center of Shanghai. [89] It is located in the central part of Shanghai's downtown area, at the southwest end of the confluence of the Huangpu River and Suzhou River. It starts from Suzhou River in the north, borders the Huangpu River in the east and south, and extends to Chengdu North Road, Yan'an Middle Road, Shaanxi South Road, Zhaojiabang Road, and Ruijin South Road in the west. The district covers an area of 20.52 square kilometers [11], of which 18.71 square kilometers are land and 1.81 square kilometers are water. [11] As of the end of 2023, it has 10 sub-districts under its jurisdiction [67] [69] and a permanent population of 504,700 [85]. Huangpu District carries the history of Shanghai's more than 700 years of city construction and more than 180 years of port opening, and has witnessed the development and changes of Shanghai as an international metropolis. [47] From the tenth year of the Tianbao reign of the Tang Dynasty (751 AD) to the Song Dynasty, it belonged to Huating County. After the district adjustment in December 1959, it was divided into Huangpu District, Luwan District, and Nanshi District. After two “reconstruction” in 2000 and 2011, Huangpu District was established [47]. Huangpu District has four distinct seasons, abundant rainfall, and a long frost-free period. It has a subtropical monsoon climate [36]. It is located in the northeast of the saucer-shaped depression of Taihu Lake and belongs to the saucer edge highland [36]. During his work in Shanghai [47], General Secretary Xi Jinping positioned Huangpu as the “heart, window, and business card” of Shanghai [47]. In June 2020, Huangpu District was selected as the first batch of national demonstration areas for the construction of a law-based government [48]. In January 2021, Huangpu District became the first batch of national cultural and tourism consumption pilot cities [49]. In 2023, Huangpu District will achieve a year-on-year growth of 5.9% in gross regional product (GDP) [85]. In 2024, Huangpu District will achieve a GDP of 334.441 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.0%.

Pudong New District (Pudong), also known as Pudong [205], is a district under the jurisdiction of Shanghai [257]. It is located in the eastern part of Shanghai, bordering the East China Sea to the east, Hangzhou Bay to the south, and the Huangpu River to the west. It is adjacent to Baoshan, Yangpu, Hongkou, Huangpu, and Xuhui districts, and borders Minhang and Fengxian districts. [13] As of March 2024, it has 12 sub-districts and 24 towns under its jurisdiction. [7] As of the end of 2024, the permanent population of Pudong New District is 5.7858 million. [245] [282] Pudong New Area is high in the southeast and low in the northwest, with a ground elevation of 3.5-4.5 meters [10]. It is located in the coastal area on the southern edge of the northern subtropical zone where the East Asian monsoon prevails. It has an oceanic climate with four distinct seasons. [247] During the Northern and Southern Dynasties, it belonged to Xinyi County, Kunshan County. [246] In the Qing Dynasty, Chuansha Fumin Hall was established, and later Chuansha Hall was changed to Chuansha County. [8] In 1958, Dongjiao and Dongchang were merged to form Pudong County [50], which was later abolished and transferred to Chuansha County. [8] In 1992, Pudong New Area was established. [50] By 2024, Pudong New Area will achieve a GDP of RMB 1,775.228 billion [280], and will lead the development of the "integrated circuit, biomedicine, intelligent networked new energy vehicles, software and information technology services" industrial clusters [254], with integrated circuits, biomedicine and artificial intelligence as the three leading industries [255]. The area has key development zones such as the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone. [57] On June 21, 2005, the State Council approved a comprehensive reform pilot. [110] On June 25, 2019, it was granted municipal economic management authority. [4] Pudong New Area is named after its location to the east of the Huangpu River [9]. The practice of development and opening up has formed a unique cultural connotation and embodies the basic values of China's reform and opening up. In summary, it is to be the first to try, to be in line with international standards and to keep pace with the times [250]. Innovative development has always been the glorious mission and responsibility of Pudong's public culture [251]. About three-quarters of its area is covered by the 2010 Shanghai World Expo Park. [105] It has won honors such as National Sanitary City (District) and National Civilized City, and is the first National Civilized District in the city.
The Bund is an area in the center of Shanghai. It consists of a section of road along the Huangpu River and the buildings and facilities along the road. It is one of Shanghai's important landmarks. It is 1.5 kilometers long, starting from Yan'an East Road in the south and ending at Waibaidu Bridge over Suzhou River in the north. To the east is the Huangpu River, and to the west is the concentration of financial and foreign trade institutions in old Shanghai. There are more than 20 historical buildings of different styles along the Bund, including eclectic, Renaissance, and early modern styles, so it is known as the "International Architecture Expo". Since Shanghai was opened to the public, the Bund has become the financial and trade center of Shanghai and even China[1], and is also known as the "Wall Street of the East"[2].

Later, the Xu family settled here for generations, and the area was named Xujiahui, hence the name of the district. [48] The district has a northern subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. [52] Xuhui District is an industrial structure dominated by modern service industry, supported by industry, commerce and real estate. [54] Xujiahui in Xuhui District is the sub-center of the city in the southwest of Shanghai.
