The 240-hour transit visa-free policy is an extension of the 144-hour transit visa-free policy. Foreign citizens who meet the requirements can stay in China for up to 10 days for legal activities such as tourism and business without applying for a visa.
Jon
I just came back from a trip to China, and I would like to share with you China's recently introduced visa-free policy for foreigners traveling to China. This is good news for friends who plan to travel to China.
China's 240-hour (i.e. 10-day) transit visa-free policy has brought great convenience to international travelers, especially those who need to transit in China and plan to stay in the city for a long time. With the acceleration of China's opening up to the outside world, the implementation of this policy has enabled many short-term travelers to move freely in China's visa-free cities. This article will explain China's 240-hour transit visa-free policy in detail, including applicable conditions, applicable cities, application procedures, common problems and other information, to help you easily plan and enjoy transit visa-free treatment.
The 240-hour transit visa-free policy, also known as the extended version of the 144-hour transit visa-free policy, means that foreign citizens who meet the conditions can stay in China for up to 10 days (240 hours) for tourism, business activities or other legal activities without applying for a Chinese visa. This policy applies to passengers passing through designated visa-free cities or regions, and must hold a valid ticket to a third country or region.
The latest 240-hour transit visa-free policy allows entry from any of the 60 open ports in 24 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) in China. These cities are usually China's international aviation hubs or important tourist destinations. According to the latest policy, the 24 provinces and cities applicable to the 240-hour transit visa-free policy include:
Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Liaoning, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Chongqing, Guizhou, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Heilongjiang, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan,
Transit visa-free personnel can stay across provinces for 240 hours in the permitted stay activity areas of 24 provinces (cities and regions).
To enjoy China's 240-hour transit visa exemption, passengers need to meet the following conditions:
240-hour transit visa exemption applies to citizens from some countries and regions recognized by the Chinese government. Including the following countries:
European countries (40): Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Monaco, Russia, United Kingdom, Ireland, Cyprus: Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Belarus, Norway;
American countries (6): United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico Argentina, Chile;
Oceania countries (2): Australia, New Zealand;
Asian countries (6): South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Brunei, United Arab Emirates, Qatar.
The passenger must hold a valid air ticket, and the destination should be a third country or region (excluding China), and the origin and destination of the ticket must be different from China.
The stay time cannot exceed 240 hours (i.e. 10 days). If the passenger's stay exceeds this time, he/she must apply for a visa and go through relevant procedures.
Passengers cannot request an extension of stay for other reasons (such as work, study, etc.). The 240-hour visa-free policy only applies to short-term stays in transit travel, and passengers must comply with the prescribed stay period.
Confirm eligibility in advance: Before departure, it is recommended that passengers confirm whether they are eligible for 240-hour transit visa exemption through the official website of the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad. Generally, citizens from countries and regions on the visa exemption list can directly enjoy this policy.
Inform border inspection personnel upon entry: When arriving at a designated visa-free city in China, passengers need to indicate to border inspection personnel that they are eligible for 240-hour transit visa exemption and show a valid passport, air ticket and other relevant materials. Border inspection personnel will check your information and approve your entry.
Prepare relevant materials: When entering the country, passengers need to provide the following materials:
· Valid passport (valid for at least six months)
· Valid air ticket to a third country
· Complete entry and exit cards (if necessary)
· Other materials that may be required (such as hotel reservation confirmation, travel plan, etc.)
The 240-hour transit visa exemption policy mainly applies to the following activities:
Tourism:
Passengers can carry out sightseeing, cultural experience and other activities in designated visa-free cities to appreciate China's rich historical and cultural heritage.
Business activities:
Passengers can carry out some short-term business activities in visa-free cities, such as attending meetings, negotiating cooperation, etc.
Visiting relatives and friends:
If there are relatives and friends in China, passengers can visit them in visa-free cities, but they cannot work or carry out any profit-making activities in China.
Shopping and leisure:
Passengers can carry out shopping, leisure and other activities in visa-free cities in China, but they cannot engage in commercial trade or paid work.

If my flight destination changes, can I still enjoy transit visa exemption?
If the flight destination changes and no longer meets the requirements for transit visa exemption, you cannot enjoy the 240-hour transit visa exemption policy and must apply for a visa in advance.
Can I go to other cities?
Yes. From December 17, 2024, the National Immigration Administration will fully relax and optimize the transit visa exemption policy, extending the stay time of foreigners in transit visa exemption from the original 72 hours and 144 hours to 240 hours, while allowing cross-provincial travel within the specified area.
Do I need to provide proof of accommodation during the transit visa exemption period?
Depending on the requirements of different cities, some cities may require proof of accommodation such as hotel reservation confirmation, so it is recommended to book a hotel in advance and prepare relevant materials.
What happens if I stay for more than 240 hours?
If you stay for more than 240 hours during the transit visa exemption period, you may face a fine or be asked to leave the country. In serious cases, you may also be included in the bad record list.
How to confirm whether you meet the transit visa exemption conditions?
You can visit the official website of the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad to check the latest visa exemption list and policy details, or you can contact the embassy or consulate directly for consultation.
 🗺 Overall route: Downtown - Lishan Garden - Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang - Downtown 📌 Route principle: The reverse route is only applicable to the situation where you can reach the Terracotta Warriors and Horses at noon. Going to Lishan Garden in the morning is to avoid the crowds who take the regular route in the afternoon~ 1⃣ Depart from the Bell Tower Subway Station at 10 am (it is better to arrive at 9 am in advance), arrive at the Qinling West Subway Station at 11 am, and take a taxi to the [Lishan Garden Visitor Center] after exiting from Exit D for about 10 yuan 💡 It is not recommended to take the bus after getting off the subway for more than two people. The bus is 5/person, and it is easy to be sold and explained informally. Waste money. 2⃣ [Tips for visiting Lishan Garden] After entering the park (Figure 2), buy a shuttle bus ticket at the gate (15/ticket, see Figure 3). If you don’t buy it, you have to walk more than ten kilometers, and you can’t make up the ticket in the middle and can only buy it at the gate. It is recommended to sit in the last row of the shuttle bus to enjoy the scenery along the way (as shown in Figure 4). 💡Lishan Garden is very large. The shuttle bus stops at 3 spots in total. The first two are burial pits, which are highly visible. After getting off the bus to visit, you can get on the shuttle bus with your ticket. The last one is the Mausoleum of Qin Shihuang (not yet developed, you can skip it without getting off the bus). After leaving Lishan Garden, take the free shuttle bus directly to the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Scenic Area. 3⃣【Tips for visiting the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shihuang】 It is about 1pm from Lishan Garden to the Terracotta Warriors and Horses. 💡At this time, the morning tourists have just left, and there are not many tourists in the afternoon. It is perfect to avoid the peak. Basically, you can stand in the front row of each pit and take a closer look. 💡It is recommended to ask for an explanation, otherwise it is meaningless to see it alone. The official explanation is on the left side of the entrance of Pit No. 1. It may be difficult to make an appointment if there are many people. You can also choose the explanation next to it after the second security check, 90R for 1-5 people, and you need to pay 8/person for headphones. The two of us joined a couple, and the average price was 30.5R per person. 💡It took about an hour to visit the three pits, and it ended at about 3 pm. The guide we invited spoke a little fast. If you want to visit slowly, it is recommended to communicate with the guide in advance. 4⃣ [Stamps and souvenirs] 💡There is an official cultural and creative store on the left side of the No. 2 pit. There are free stamps at the door (but the ink is not enough and the stamps are not good-looking). You can stamp ordinary stamps for any purchase in the store (very ordinary, as shown in Figure 7, you can consider going to the theme post office to stamp), and you can stamp specific stamps for buying specific cultural and creative products. 💡There is a [Terracotta Warriors Theme Post Office] not far from the exit. There are free color stamps at the door and two theme stamps in the store (as shown in Figure 8). ❗️The key point is that it is recommended to buy a set of five Terracotta Warriors postage postcards from the Bell Tower Post Office before coming. It is only 5.5/set, which is super cost-effective, and the design is also very beautiful (as shown in Figure 6)! 5/piece in the scenic area! 5⃣【Return to the city】 After the trip, if you don’t want to walk out of the 1.5-kilometer commercial street, you can turn right, go straight and turn right again until you see a sign for “Qinwei Jike Farmhouse Food” (as shown in Figure 9), where you can take a taxi. The whole journey takes about 5 minutes, which is much faster than walking out of the commercial street!!! It is recommended to take a taxi to Line 9 [Huaqing Pool] in the off-season and to the starting station [Qinling West] in the peak season, so that you can get a seat on the subway.
I successfully visited the Terracotta Warriors during the holiday, and the experience was better than expected. I must go to Lishan Garden, where the bronze chariots and horses are ~ the most expensive car in the world is there! It is strongly recommended to visit Lishan Garden first on holidays and weekends! Then visit the Terracotta Warriors, because most people, especially tour groups, visit the Terracotta Warriors first, so that you can avoid the large group and have a better experience. 1️⃣Buy tickets: Buy tickets at the "Qin Shihuang Mausoleum Museum" a few days in advance, don't buy them on the day! 120/person includes the Terracotta Warriors and Lishan Garden, and bring your ID card 2️⃣Xi'an food recommendations: There are too many, I went to Xi'an 5 times just to eat! This article cannot be written due to the word count limit, so I put it in another article. ⬇️The one-day tour timeline is as follows, just follow it⬇️ [9:30] Depart, take the subway directly to Qinling West, take a taxi for more than 10 yuan to Lishan Park Visitor Center [11:00] Arrive at Lishan Park, the 15 yuan shuttle bus must be arranged, otherwise your legs will break. Lishan has free tour guides but you have to wait. Tour sequence: 9901 Exhibition Hall - Bronze Chariot and Horse Exhibition Hall - 0006 Exhibition Hall [opposite to the Bronze Chariot and Horse, don't take the electric car to the Emperor's Mausoleum directly after leaving the Bronze Chariot and Horse, don't ask me how I know haha] - Qin Shihuang's Mausoleum [optional] - end [13:30] Exit Lishan Garden, take a free shuttle bus [public transportation] to the Terracotta Warriors, the bus is not very crowded [14:00] Go to the commercial plaza next to the Terracotta Warriors to eat at Qin Shihuang's hand. I recommend Weijia Liangpi. The chain is clean and hygienic, and there are more seats on the two floors. Crazy carbon water inhalation hahaha [15:00] Find a tour guide. You can find a tour guide inside or outside the door. The tour guide mechanism of the Terracotta Warriors is quite chaotic. You must hire a tour guide, otherwise all you see is a pile of dirt and a bunch of people. Tour sequence: Pit 1 - Pit 3 - Pit 2 [17:00] End, you can take a taxi to Qinling West Subway Station to return to the city. This is the starting station with a seat hhh. If you want to watch the Song of Everlasting Regret performance, take a taxi to Huaqingchi subway station.
1️⃣Dandong: 🎫Check-in point: Weihao Market-Heshi Bird's Nest (Dandong Word Wall)-Zhonglian Hotel (overlooking the Yalu River)-Yalu River Broken Bridge-Anton Old Street 2️⃣Dandong-Ji'an: I heard that some routes are super difficult to walk, so we first went to the Hunjiang Turn with our navigation, and then continued to Ji'an~The whole journey was very easy to walk. Dandong was a little crazy when we just came out, but it was not far 3️⃣Ji'an: Arrived at night, went to Huoben Street first, 50 per person~ 🎫Check-in point: Ji'an Morning Market-Dajita Square-Lao Biekang (flooded when we went there)-Goguryeo Maru Mountain City-National Gate Food: Yinglan Pot-Boiled Pork, very delicious, just near Dajita Square~ 4️⃣Changbai Mountain West Slope: Changbai Mountain is very large, with southeast, northwest and northwest slopes. We chose the west slope where there are relatively few people. Tickets need to be booked in advance. We closed the mountain due to rain, so we chose to take the kids to dig ginseng and pick blueberries🫐, which was also a great experience. There is a Wanda Resort on the west slope, and the accommodation includes some entertainment activities. You can consider staying for a night to repair. 5️⃣ Yanbian: 🎫 Check-in point: Internet celebrity bullet screen wall-Korean Folk Village-Floating Market-West Market My hometown Qingdao is too close to South Korea, so I am not very interested here~ The streets are full of barbecues. Everyone can choose according to their own preferences. The price is high in the Northeast, but it is not outrageous. 6️⃣ Dongning: I originally planned to go to Vladivostok, so I went to Dongning. 🎫 Check-in point: Dongning Fortress~ 7️⃣ Suifenhe: ⭐City walk route → Rentou Building → Former Site of the Soviet Consulate → Suifenhe Museum → Former Site of the Orthodox Church → Memory of the Middle East Railway → Centennial Port→Dabailou ⭐Love Valley (although a bit earthy, the air is really good, 520 meters above sea level, quite interesting~) I like this city very much, very warm and loving, and there are many Russians~ full of exotic customs 8️⃣Hegang: I didn’t play, just passed by for a while, it’s closer to Yichun Deer Park from Hegang, and the barbecue in Hegang is more delicious~ 9️⃣Yichun: 🎫Check-in point: Jinshan Deer Park-Tangwang River Forest There are many forest parks in Yichun, just choose the ones you are interested in, you don’t have to go to every one~ 🔟Heihe: 🎫Check-in point: Mother Square-Heilongjiang Park Boundary Monument-Ma Zhanshan Memorial Hall- Memorial Hall of Overseas Chinese in Russia-Heihe Chamber of Commerce-Citizen Cultural Center-Aihui Tengchong Line Theme Park 🚘The RV camp in Heihe is very good, and many people come here to rest 11. Tahe: It is still a small county town that you pass by. After passing by, you continue to rush to Mohe~ There is a small camp in Tahe, which is also very good~ 12. Mohe: 🎫Check-in point: I didn’t go into the Mohe dance hall. The small county town of Mohe is very small. You can stroll around and see it. Many people come here to go to the Arctic Village. When I went there ten years ago, I didn’t need a ticket, so I didn’t go this time The recommended routes are basically one-day self-driving tours, not in-depth tours. The most beautiful scenery is on the road.
It turns out that the North Ruyi Gate has the least people, the most flat roads, and is closest to the painting. Most importantly, the number of steps after walking this route is only about 11,000, and it takes more than 3 hours. If you don't want to climb the slope or squeeze in the crowd, Beiruyi Gate is undoubtedly the best choice as the entrance👍 Route: Beiruyi Gate👉 Banbi Bridge👉 Suyunyan City Gate👉 Painting Tour👉 Mountain and Lake Light on the Same Floor👉 Paiyun Gate/Yunhui Yuyu Archway👉 Yaoyue Gate👉 Leshou Hall👉 Dehe Hall (passing by)👉 Xiqu Garden👉 Ziqi Donglai City Gate👉 Renshou Hall👉 Zhichun Pavilion👉 Wenchang Pavilion👉 Seventeen-Arch Bridge/Nanhu Island👉 New Palace Gate Tips: 1. The opening hours of the Summer Palace are 6:30-18:00 in the off-season, but it should be noted that the Painting Tour and other fee-charging courtyards are closed at 17:00. Peak season (April 1st - October 31st): 6:00 am - 7:00 pm, the painting tour and fee-paying courtyards are open from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. 2. The entrance ticket is 20 yuan per person, and the combined ticket is 50 yuan per person. The Summer Palace is very large and you can't visit it all in one day. It is recommended to buy only the entrance ticket. Other fee-paying courtyards can be entered on site. (Note: The entrance ticket is 30 yuan per person in the peak season, and the combined ticket is 60 yuan per person) 3. There are 6 gates in the Summer Palace. As mentioned earlier, entering from the North Ruyi Gate is the best choice. Let's talk about the entrances and exits of other gates: 3a. Beigong Gate is closest to Exit C of the subway station, but there are more people queuing here during peak season and weekends, and if you go the wrong way from this gate, you have to climb up and down all kinds of hills and ridges. If you have difficulty walking, choose carefully... (The advantage is that this gate is closest to Suzhou Street and the Four Continents) 3b. Donggong Gate is closest to Xiyuan Station and is the entrance that many tour groups like. Xinjian Palace Gate has fewer people, but the disadvantage is that it is a bit far from the subway station, and you need to take a taxi or bus directly to get there. Ximen and Nanruyi Gate are far from the main attractions. If you are not staying in Beijing for a long time, it is not recommended to enter from these two gates. 4. If you want to take pictures of "golden light through the hole", 4-5 o'clock is the best time to shoot ~ but it is best to go to Nanhu Island before 4 o'clock to get a good seat.
