Coloane (Portuguese: Coloane) was formerly known as Yanwan, Yanzaowan, Jiuao Island or Apowei. It was named after Jiuao Bay in the northeast corner and Jiuao Mountain on the island. In addition, some people believe that the Portuguese name of Coloane is a transliteration of the island's ancient Cantonese name "Guoluwan". It is now a part of Macau and one of the four major parts (regions) that make up Macau. Since most of the island has not been developed, it has rich vegetation and beautiful scenery, so Coloane is known as Macau's last back garden. The area above the middle of the highest peak of Coloane Island, Deshitangshan, is designated as a country park and Mazu Cultural Village and is strictly protected. Coloane was originally an independent island. The northern coastline runs along Shek Pai Wan Road to the east coast of Yingshan Lake (now the site of the Outlying Islands Hospital [1]) [2]. Due to long-term land reclamation, it is now connected to Taipa. The area between the two islands formed by land reclamation is now Cotai.
